MANILA, Philippines - The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP)on Tuesday filed a petition before the wage board for an additional P86 in minimum pay for workers in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces (CALABARZON).
TUCP said that the current minimum pay for workers in CALABARZON is P337. If the wage board approves the petition, the minimum pay in the region would be raised to P423.
In a four-page petition, TUCP president Democrito Mendoza asked the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-Region 4 in Calamba City today for an increase in wage, saying that the request was filed more than a year after the pay minimum was adjusted.
Mendoza cited the continuing increases in the prices of basic commodities triggered by a series price hike of gas and diesel, LPG, automatic adjustments in rates of electricity and other utilities in the region as supervening events that should merit an increase.
Government figures showed that as of December 2011, the purchasing power of the latest P337 daily minimum wage was only 194.12 pesos, an erosion of 42.4 percent.
With the recent use of base year 2006 from year 2000, the purchasing power of P337 was computed at P262.67, or a reduction of 22.06 percent.
In April 2010, the TUCP petitioned the wage board to add P75 to the minimum pay. However, the wage board only approved an adjustment of P17 in January 2011.
The wage board recently dismissed the P90 wage hike petition filed by the TUCP, saying there is no supervening event to merit a salary increase.
